“Hello, this is Daniella from Daniella.io and today I am going to show you how to use Canva. Canva is a really great and free online tool to design photos, infographics, social media images, covers and more. It is the perfect Photoshop alternative for basic needs. Here is how it works. Head over to Canva.com and sign up.

Choose what you would like to use Canva for. Once selected you will wind up in your dashboard.

The first time you arrive here, Canva will show you a few examples of what you can make with their tool: social media graphics, presentations, banners, postcards and cards are among a few examples. I am just going to close this window to continue to give you a tour but you can play around with Canva instead if you want.

So in your dashboard you have access to your designs, designs that were shared with you (from a friend or colleague for example) and to a bunch of templates depending on what you want to create.

What is really cool with Canva is that their templates are pre-size. For example, you have Facebook covers at 851 x 315 pixels and the Facebook post that is already pre-sized at 940 x 788 pixels which is really useful when you are not sure of the optimal size for these items. There are quite a few templates available.

If you cannot find what you are looking for, you can use custom dimensions. You can size your image in pixels, millimetres or inches.

We are going to create an example social media image. So, once you arrive in Canva, you will notice the right side of the screen is dedicated to creating your image, the left contains tons of resources to help you out.

Canva is a free tool, however, their business model is based on making a profit on selling paid templates and images. To see if an item is paid or not, just look for the “Free” indication or the dollar sign on the item you are about to select. I will show you how you know if you have to pay for anything or not at the end of this tutorial.

Lets have a look at what is out there. So you have pre-made layouts you can use. I do suggest you edit them and do not use them as is. Make sure your work matches your brand and unique message.

In the Elements tab, you can choose from Free photos, Grids, Frames, Shapes, Lines, Illustrations, Icons and Charts. So there are tons of free photos you can choose from and use. I’m just gonna pop this one on to our canvas for the example. Canva is all drag-and-drop which makes it super easy to use. I just have to resize the photo to fit our canvas.

Grids are pre-made photo layouts. We won’t use any here. This  same thing goes for frames. You can play around with that in your free time if you want. Then in shapes you have a bunch of shapes that are easy to drag around and resize for various needs. I like to make dark filters with the square shape. Just pop it on the screen, size it, and change the color and transparency.

You also add, lines, illustrations and icons. These are all really great for infographics and can save you a lot of time and money.

The Text tab offers you various pre-made text layouts. A lot of them are free. Click on what you want and drag and drop to position it. Just double click in the text to edit.

You also have backgrounds if you want to change the background color, texture, or image of your canvas. You can also upload your own photos and images.

Another thing you can do in Canva is edit photos with filters. Honestly, Canva’s filters are not the best but they are always making their product better and I am sure they will come up with better photo filters in the future.

Hit the Download button at the top of the page to download your work to your computer. There are a few formats available. So what we just did was an example of a free download.

If you were downloading paid content you would see this:

Your designs are automatically saved.

And that is it for this Canva tutorial. The only issues I have had with the tool are a few bugs once in a while and working with kinda lousy photo filters. However, Canva is constantly being updated and fixed. I would give it 4.5 stars on 5 and would recommend it to anyone looking for a pretty much free online tool to to create professional-looking graphic designs.

Thanks for watching this tutorial, do not forget to subscribe!”

You can get inspiration from their idea page. You can also check out their design tutorials in their Canva Tutorial section. Canva is a great Photoshop alternative for those looking for a free online photo editor to do basic montages. Canva is especially ideal to create professional looking social media images and infographics.
