The mechanism that secures the Bitcoin network. To add a block of transactions to the blockchain, miners must perform a costly computational task expending real-world energy. This makes Bitcoin’s ledger incorruptible and means Bitcoin cannot be created from nothing: each coin represents real energy expenditure.
